2nd day of YONEX OPEN JAPAN 2007 |
|

We have reached the second day of the Yonex Open Japan 2007 Badminton BWF Super Series on Wednesday, the 12th of September.
The first event for the day was Mixed Doubles. Here, Japan’s Keita Masuda and Miyuki Maeda, ranked 18th in the world, had a breathtaking match with Taiwan’s Pie Rong Wang and Sheng Mu Lee. Masuda quoted “During the first game, it was difficult to return the shuttle to the end of the court because the wind was blowing in our direction.” As a result, Taiwan was able to stay neck to neck with Masuda and Maeda as they reached 20-20. Japan pulled away and took the game at 22-20. In the second game, Japan took advantage of the wind now blowing in their favor and won the game and match with a final score of 21-9. “We were able to win because my partner Masuda puts full effort in to winning one point at a time” said Maeda. Their opponents in the second round are Thailand’s Saralee Thoungthongkam and Sudket Prapakamol who have already won over Mami Naito and Zhiyuan Liu from Japan.

In the first round of Men’s Singles, Japan’s ace Shoji Sato played against Kay Bin Yeoh of Malaysia, ranked 26th in the world. Although Sato has a higher world ranking, the match resulted in an upset for Japan. Sato got the lead in the first game, but his mistakes began to surface as Yeoh won the first 11 points. After the interval, Sato began his come-back. He kept Yeoh running from corner to corner, finally finishing the rally with a steep and quick cross-smash. Sato could not catch up in time, and could not win the first game. The second game did not go as planned either. Sato was able to keep up with Yeoh past deuce, but his net shots were not going over well. “My stamina was not a problem. Because the match point kept on going back and forth, I began to rush my plays instead of balancing my offense and defense” stated Sato after he lost the second game and match at 25-23.

On the other hand, Kenichi Tago of Japan, winner of one of the qualifying rounds, played Wei Ng of Hong Kong, ranked 21st in the world. Tago had a good rhythm going for himself during the second game as he gradually won points with his clean smash and net plays. The spectators believed it would be an easy match for Tago as he won the first game 21-10. Ng sped up his game after the interval and began to pick up the smashes Tago had been using to win his points. As the rallies grew longer, Tago showed more mistakes and dropped 9 points in a row. Ng won the second game 21-6 and continued at the same pace in the final game with quick cross clears. Tago tried hard to win one point at a time at the net, but could not find the chance to kill any easy shots. “Unlike me, Ng was very patient in waiting for the right shots to win each point. I did not have very good stamina either. I believe I must learn to play the second and third game a lot better than I did today” said Tago as he regret the outcome of the match. Ng claimed “Tago has a lot of potential and if he continues to gain experience, I am sure that in a few years time, he will become one of the world’s top badminton players.”
