Semi Final of YONEX OPEN JAPAN 2007 |

YONEX OPEN JAPAN 2007 Badminton BWF Super Series played all semifinal games on the 5th day 15th.
On mixed doubles, world number 1 on the 1st seed, Zheng Bo/Gao Ling (China) played non-seed pair Kamillia Rytter Juhl/Thomas Laybourn (Denmark).
On the 1st set, they competed each other until the middle of the 1st set, and when the China pair led 11-8 the game was turned up.
From this point, Zheng Bo pushed the opponent with some sharp smashes and made points, so the point difference between them was increasing.
And the China pair won the 1st set by 21-17.
On the 2nd set, the China pair continued controlling the game. While the Denmark pair did a lot of misses, Zheng Bo strong smashes made some points, the China pair made
6 consecutive points from 10-8, so the point difference between them was 8 points. The China pair continued leading the points until Zheng Bo did a smash for a match point 20-11, from this point Gao Ling's smash could not be returned by Thomas and consequently the China pair, again, won the 2nd set. They deserved to go to the final game tomorrow.

On the other side, Hyo Jung Lee/San Hoon Han (South Korea) played world number 2 Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir (Indonesia).
On the 1st set, Nova Widianto created a lot of chances by attacking the opponent and the Indonesian pair could make some points to make the point's difference was increasing.
From this point, Nova Widianto stayed at the back side, did some great smashed and Lilyana Natsir cut the receiving shuttlecock in front row to push the opponent until they won the 1st set by 21-11.
At the beginning of the 2nd set, the South Korea pair led the score, but Nova Widianto often put the shuttlecock to the left and right court, which was unexpected by the opponent, and the Indonesia pair could make some points.
"This is a worldwide class championship, so we have to relax during the game", Nova Widianto said. By having a self-confidence and the overpower of the Indonesia pair,
they ended the 2nd set by winning the game by 21-14, straight set.
"We played very well today and I felt good during the game. We will face the China pair tomorrow and we have known them very well, so we wont change the way we play,
we will play like what we played so far", Nova Widianto said.

On the man single, the defending champion, Lin Dan (China) played world number 4 Chong Wei Lee (Malaysia). Lin Dan led the score until the middle stage of the game,
but from this point, Lin Dan did a lot of misses and backed by some sharp smashes, Chong Wei Lee made 5 consecutive points, from the score of 12-14 he did some crossing smashes and also accurate lob, and he turned-around the game by leading the score by 15-14. Lin Dan again made a lot of misses until Chong Wei Lee could make a game point. While Lin Dan tried to recover his condition, his smash hit the net and consequently Chong Wei Lee won the 1st set.
On the 2nd set, Chong Wei Lee led the game from the beginning. From the score of 10-8 he played with a lot of combination with straight smashes, patience playing and rally,
he made 5 consecutive points, so the point's difference between them increased. While Lin Dan was trying to challenge, Chong Wei Lee grasp a match point.
On the last play, Chong Wei Lee did a superb hair pin netting and he ended the game by winning the 2nd set, straight set, and he deserved to go to the final match.
"I am not in a best condition today, I have just lost my title on the world class championship, but the most important thing is I need to improve the way I am playing", Lin Dan said. On the other hand, with very high spirit Chong Wei Lee said, "I will play Taufik on the final, I have to change the tactics and also I need to be able to adapt in order to win the game".

The 2nd game of the man single, world number 10, Taufik Hidayat (Indonesia), played world number 17, Simon Santoso (Indonesia).Young Simon Santoso showed his best effort and it seems like both of them are in the same level.
On the 1st set, the game was very balance until the scoreboard showed 7 all, but from this point by more experiences, Taufik Hidayat controlled the game.
By putting the shuttlecock in the back side of the opponent, doing some accurate backhands, playing some great netting and also doing some jumping smashes, Taufik won the 1st set by 21-14.
On the 2nd set, while Simon started to do some smashes and while Taufik did a some misses, the point was very competitive, only 1 point's difference between each other.
Taufik deiced to do some cross-smashes and hair pin, from this point he also did some jumping smashes to excitingly put the shuttlecock on the opponent's court, until he won by 21-16. He deserved to go to the final, and regarding to the final match he said, "my opponent on the final game is a good player as he defeated Lin Dan. The last time we met, it was in China Super Series and I lost. I will do the best I can do but also I will try to relax during the game".

In the women’s singles Tine Rasmussen, who had beaten Ning Zhang (China) defending champion, faced Chinese young hope, Lan Lu at the semi-final today.
Rasmussen showed her outstanding performance and in particular she managed to receive Lu’s smash and returned the shuttle to the air and the Lu’s court. As Rasmussen’s returns were so good and accurate, Lu was unable to finish the rally easier. During the first game, Lu seemed to have been tried to keep attacking.
Rasumussen won the first game at 21-19.
In the second game, again it seemed that Lu lost her concentration and made several unforced errors. Rasmussen leads 14-6 in the middle of the game and Lu was not able to catch up with Rasumussen who closed the game at 21-9 to win.
Rasumussen was so happy to have won the match and analyzed in saying that when playing against Chinese players, I need a patience the most.

Another semi-final of the Women’s singles were Xie Xingfang(world ranked no.2) vs Jun Jae Youn (world ranked no. 69), who has recently come back and joined Korean national team. June won the recent US Open and a runner up at the Canadian Inter nation this year.
Xie placed the shuttle to the extreme corner of June’s court, which June had a difficulty to return to the course that she intended. Xie leads 11-7 and won another 6 consecutive points in a row.
Xie finished the first game at 21-9.
In the second game, June came back and lead 11-8 on time, however Xie again finished at 21-17 and won the match 2-0.
Xie explained to press that she has analyzed June’s play well and which helped her a lot to win the match relatively easy. |

World’s No. 1 Women’s Doubles, Yawen Zhang and Yili Wei of China, played Wei Yang and Jiewen Zhang also from China. Although Wei Yang and Jiewen Zhang are ranked lower than their opponents, they had proved their skill at the World Championships that took place in Malaysia by winning the gold medal. In the first game, the rallies were stayed even until 20-20. The pair to take the game was Wei Yang and Jiewen Zhang at 23-21.
Yang and Zhang took initiative of their lead from the first game and continued it in the second. Yang used her consistent defense to change their strategy to offense as Zhang grabbed points with her powerful smashes. Wei and Zhang could not keep up as the match ended 21-11.
After the match, Wei Yang stated “We were able to show our best game in the Semi-Finals.” Jiewen Zhang also said “There was a time when we tried playing with different partners but when we started playing together again, our communication during the matches became even better than before.”

On the other side of the draw for Women’s Doubles, Ling Gao and Sui Huang of China, seeded no. 2 in this tournament, played Tingting Zhao and Yang Yu, also from China. Gao and Huang had won the 2006 World Championships and was runner-up for this year’s World Championships. The game began with Sui Huang’s smashes and Ling Gao’s quick net plays. The points stayed close as it approached 20-20. Huang and Gao were able to reduce their mistakes as they won 22-20.
In the second game, Huang and Gao began to make more mistakes and lost their lead for the game. Zhao and Yu took advantage of this chance, and grabbed the game at 21-15. In the final game, the rallies became longer, but Huang and Gao continued their mistakes. “Although our rotation was not as good as it should be, we were able to play without much pressure. We were able to show our best game” said Tingting Zhao after she attacked a short smash return at the net to win the match 22-20. Huang and Gao later claimed “Our opponents were having a great match and we were not able to show what we are capable of.” |

Men's doubles (semifinal) 1st match; Markis Kido & Hendra Setiwan(INA) world No.3 rankers and winner of best world championship VS Luluk Hadiyanto & Alvent Yulianto Chandra(INA) world No.8 ranker.
Hadiyanto & Chandra attack at front court using their drive shot and skillful racket work, while, Kido & Hendra are in their top condition after win in world championships.
1st game, Kido & Hendra made mistakes many times, and after 16-13 Hadiyanto & Chandra got 4 points in row, to win the game by Kido's robbing against cut shot of Chandra outed.
2nd game Kido & Chandra still could not recover their rythem of attack, and Hadiyanto & Chandra won the match. They said, "Tommorrow we will do our best and wish to win though opponents are very strong and our most respecting players. " |

Men's doubles 2nd match; Chandra Wijaja(INA) & Tony Gunawan(USA), winner of last Yonex Open Japan who won the match against Japanese Sakamoto & Ikeda yesterday. VS Lars Paaske & Jonas Rasmussen(DEN) who beat 1st seeded Haifeng Fu & Yun Cai(CHN).
While Tony controls shuttles to lead to Chandra's strong shot, Paaske controls to lead Rasmussen's acute angled smash. That means match between the teams with similar play style.
Both pairs positively use fast drive shot and match proceeded very excitingly.
1st game Denmark pair won.
Indonesia lead 2nd game until their win.
Final game was very tight and though. Indonesia was leading through the game even though Gunawan made several mis shots too conscious of win,
Finally Indonesia won after 3 times deuce.
Chandra & Tony said "Tommorrow we surely win which is most important for us. We also wish to show all fan in our loving Yonex Open Japan." |
